YG, real name Keenon Jackson, signed to Def Jam after the success of his debut single “Toot It And Boot It“. The song featured Ty Dolla $ign and peaked at no.12 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs. Since then, YG’s first album My Krazy Life recieved critical acclaim and was voted one of the best albums of 2014. This is partly due to DJ Mustard‘s production:
“YG could’ve shit on a mic with Mustard as co-pilot and still turned out a halfway listenable hour of music, but to his instead he’s used My Krazy Life to play with the gun-toting lothario rubric he pieced together on the earlier mixtapes.” – Craig Jenkins, Pitchfork
